Big brain is the biggest brain part. This highly complex organ has various important functions for the body, such as regulating body movements, language skills, thinking and storing memory.
Large brain is divided into 2 parts, namely the left brain and right brain. The left hemisphere controls the movements of the right side of the body, while the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body. These two parts are connected by nerve fibers called the corpus callosum.
Based on several theories, there is an assumption that these two hemispheres have their own functions. It is said that the left hemisphere of the cerebrum plays an important role in language skills, counting and speaking. While the right hemisphere helps interpret abstract things, such as music, shapes, emotions, and colors.
But actually, the left brain and right brain work simultaneously in a coordinated way, in carrying out their functions.
Large Brain Function Based on Its Parts
The right brain and left brain are divided into four parts called lobes, namely the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe, and occipital lobe. Each lobe of the cerebrum has their respective functions, namely:1. Frontal lobe
The frontal lobe is the largest part of the cerebrum and is located in the front of the brain. This section plays an important role in controlling body movements, assessing and planning things, solving problems, and managing emotions and self-control. Damage to the frontal lobes can cause changes in sexual behavior and habits, disruption in sociability, decreased concentration, difficulty speaking and regulating emotions, and weakening of the opposite side of the body. For example, damage to the left forebrain will interfere with right body movement.2. The occipital lobe
The occipital lobe is located in the back of the brain. This part of the cerebrum is useful to help us recognize objects through the sense of sight and understand the meaning of written words. Damage to these lobes can cause problems in the form of difficulty recognizing objects, inability to identify colors, hallucinations, and difficulty understanding words.3. Temporal lobe
The temporal lobes are located on both sides of the head which are parallel to the ear. This part of the cerebrum is responsible for auditory, memory and emotional functions. Damage to the temporal lobe can cause problems with memory, speech perception, and language skills.4. Parietal lobe
The parietal lobe is located behind the frontal lobe. This section has an important role in interpreting messages from other parts of the brain. The parietal lobe also plays a role in interpreting touch, body movements, pain sensations, and ability to count. Fine motor skills that use the fingers, such as writing or painting, are also controlled by this part of the cerebrum. Injury or damage to the parietal lobe can cause a person to lose sensation (numbness or tingling) on the opposite side of the body.Maintaining Brain Health
Given the function of the cerebrum that is so important, brain health should be maintained properly. Some ways to maintain brain health are:- Doing activities that can sharpen and train the brain
- Exercise regularly
- Do not smoke
- Reducing stress
- Wear head protection when driving or doing certain sports
